Cumbria LNRS

helping nature and wildlife thrive in Cumbria

Making space for nature in our county

Westmorland and Furness Council, supported by Cumberland Council, Natural England, Lake District National Park Authority and Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, are working in collaboration with over 300 organisations to create a Local Nature Recovery Strategy for Cumbria. These strategies are required by law under the Environment Act 2021.

The Local Nature Recovery Strategy will act as the blueprint to help nature and wildlife thrive in Cumbria. The strategy will outline what the priorities are for habitat and species recovery and show where this should take place.

Over the next 12 months, the strategy will be shaped with support from a variety of groups including environmental organisations, the farming community, local businesses, communities and public bodies.

LNRS Strategy

The LNRS document will include a list of priorities for habitat and species recovery, and associated measures or actions which are needed to deliver this change. The map will identify areas that are currently important for biodiversity, and opportunity areas where efforts to restore and create new habitats would deliver maximum benefit. These two parts of the LNRS will work together to support and inform nature recovery efforts in Cumbria.
